Pet Insurance: Is it worth it?

As pet parents, we all worry about what would happen in the case of illness or injury. We want to do whatever necessary to give our pets the best possible medical care but sometimes, finances become a barrier.

If you’re a pet owner, you need to be in a position to provide proper care for your pet. Think of pet insurance as a preventative measure in case your pet gets hurt or develops an illness. In the case of accidents, pet insurance can help you worry less if your cat eats something they shouldn’t or your dog hurts his leg after having too much fun at the dog park. In the case of illness, pet insurance can help cover the costs of digestive problems, infections, cancer and countless other health issues that may arise.

Here are some questions to ask when considering purchasing pet insurance:

  • What percentage of fees will be reimbursed?
  • What is the deductible?
  • Do the premiums change as the pet ages?
  • Is there a physical exam required to get coverage?
  • Are prescription drugs covered?
  • Is there a waiting period?
  • Are you covered if you travel with your pet?
  • Can you choose any vet clinic or animal hospital?
  • Does my breed or type of pet come with exclusions?
  • Are hereditary or congenital issues covered if not diagnosable at time of sign up?
  • Are exams covered?

How Much Does Pet Insurance Cost?

Your pet’s age, species, breed, as well as where you live and the coverage package you choose, area all factors into your insurance rates. The younger your pet is when you obtain insurance, the less expensive it usually is.

Pet insurance can lower the financial burden of costly veterinary procedures, provide peace of mind, and help your bet get better faster with less stress on you. Talk to your veterinarian to find the carriers they recommend. We’re happy to talk about the providers our clients tend to use the most, including Trupanion and Pet Secure.

When you do choose a provider, ask if they have a free trial. If so, we suggest first going on the trial while ensuring you’re immediately transitioned to the permanent plan once the trial is complete. This often allows you to forego the waiting period and have your pet’s insurance begin right away! Pet insurance gives many people peace of mind, especially knowing they are covered in case of emergency. We recommend looking at multiple different plans, asking questions, and making an informed decision.
